IND vs SL: Sanju Samson is one of the best wicketkeeper-batsmen in the domestic circuit. However, the 27-year-old has been in the shadows of other cricketers. As a result, he didn’t get many chances to play for India.
As of now, Rishabh Pant has been the primary choice in terms of the wicketkeeper slot. The Indian selectors have also reiterated the fact that they are grooming Rishabh Pant as the young wicketkeeper.
There were several occasions where Sanju Samson was included in India’s squad. However, he hardly got a chance to showcase his mettle. Overall, he has played just one ODI for Team India.
As far as T20Is are concerned, he played 10 games. He scored 46 runs in the only match he has played for Men in Blue at an average of 46. Sanju Samson made his ODI debut for India against Sri Lanka in 2021.
Despite scoring a decent knock, the selectors didn’t pick him up for the next series. Since then, he has been warming the bench. Sanju Samson hardly made an impact in the shortest format of the game.
The Kerala captain scored 117 runs at an average of 11.70. He has arrived in Lucknow along with his teammates for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka. The right-handed batsman has been added to India’s squad for Sri Lanka T20Is.
IND vs SL: Rohit Sharma showers praise on Sanju Samson
Meanwhile, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has reserved the highest respect for Sanju Samson. The 34-year-old senior cricketer highlighted that Sanju Samson has got the skill to succeed.
Sanju Samson may not have done well in T20Is but he will be hoping to perform better when he gets a chance. It remains to be seen if he will be given a chance to feature in the T20Is.
The first T20I between India and Sri Lanka will get underway on February 24 in Lucknow (Thursday). Rohit Sharma addressed the reporters at the pre-match virtual press conference.
“Sanju Samson has got talent – Whenever we have seen him bat he has produced an innings where people go over the moon. He has got the skill set to succeed – his backfoot game is brilliant – he is definitely in consideration,” Sharma added.
Rohit Sharma expressed his disappointment after Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Chahar were ruled out of the Sri Lanka T20Is. Talking about the same, the skipper called it a “big setback”.
“A big setback. He was in great form but there are so many guys waiting for an opportunity. At the same time, I am sad for Surya. A freak injury. You can’t control these things,” he stated.
